Bull Poker
The revelry and camaraderie that takes place on the edge of this
high desert region , makes Lakeview a popular destination for a last
"hoopla " to end the summer, and begin the Fall. The Lake County
Round-up and Fair celebrate melding western traditions of the past
with progress and challenges of the future.
Destruction Derby
The Lake County Round-Up in conjunction with the Desert Cruisers car
club will again host one of the oldest and wildest destruction
derbies in the North -West. Participants come from through out
Oregon, California, and Washington to this popular event held in the
rodeo arena Sunday Sept 5th starting at 6;00 PM. This is usually a
sell out event and ticket prices are $9, and can be purchased at
local businesses, or at the gate
History of Round-Up
The Lake County Round-Up was started in 1920 after local citizens
formed an association, selling 99 shares at $ 100 each to
individuals and businesses. In less than 6 weeks they acquired land
on the West edge of Lakeview, built corrals, secured livestock, and
put on Lakeview's first annual rodeo. It was deemed a huge success
with Samual P. Dicks as president. He was reelected, and the
following years plans were drawn up. Over the years, many prominent
citizens from throughout the Goose Lake Valley and Lake County have
served at this post.
The Lake County Round-Up is the fourth oldest rodeo in Oregon, with
Union county, Pendleton, and the Molalla Buckeroo preceding it. This
rodeo has evolved and changed to meet the interests and needs of the
celebrants who come loyally each year. For many years the
association owned their own livestock used to put on the rodeo
performances, and they were branded with the association 3B brand.
The first court was selected in 1925 when Ruby Gibson Overstreet was
chosen as queen. Many courts that followed were arrived at by the
selling of tickets, and girls selling the most tickets were picked
to reign over this growing event.
The Round Up has remained an amateur show, allowing competitors from
throughout the High Desert Basin and beyond, to test the skills
acquired in their daily lives, against the time clock and each
other.
Lake County is located in South Central Oregon and borders
California's Modoc County. Its 8,300 square miles comprise a varied
environment from high mountain forests and meadows, sagebrush
covered deserts and hills, to natural wetlands and hot springs.
